Since Microsoft announced the postponement and roll-out strategy change of the license enforcement for Microsoft Dynamics 365 F&O apps, the engineering team responsible for the license consumption reporting has not been retired. Feedback provided by clients worldwide is evaluated, put on a roadmap, prioritized, and executed.

In this post, you will learn about enhancements provided to the Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC) report. This is both on the visuals as well as the data presented. This post is created based on a preview of the User license consumption report.

As of September 1, the rollout will start for in-app notifications in case users do not have the proper licenses assigned. The past week, after returning from my vacation, I noticed that many clients are still not fully prepared and have various questions. However, some clients are ready from their point of view. In this post, I will share some experiences and recommendations about what I have seen and heard.

When Microsoft announced the user license enforcement, initially, a lot of partners and clients were lost. There was hardly any information available about the correct number of licenses. In between, Microsoft “changed the rules” by deprecating old license calculation logic available within the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations application. This logic contained errors, and a new calculation was introduced, which is running in the Power Platform Admin Center, outside of Dynamics 365. The new logic contained some issues, but Microsoft is working hard to get those errors resolved. Next to solving the calculation issues, Microsoft is taking feedback using a private preview group and support. You might have noticed that filtering on PPAC wasn’t working quite well. This is something that was reported, but takes time to fix and roll out to all clients. While reviewing the V2 version of the report, I also provided an idea to improve the visibility of the new report. I’m happy that Microsoft picked up the idea, which is now available on the Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC).

In this blog, I will share my experiences on the license enforcement status after interaction with clients and Microsoft. Microsoft is working hard to solve all reported issues. In the meantime, due to the wrong presentation of data and changes made on the Licenses usage summary page, the clients are still lost or think they need to acquire a lot of additional licenses.

I will explain the current status and how to interpret the new information, like the data on the User license consumption report, and form Licenses usage summary, and also when not to trust the reported data, as there are still errors in the reported license requirement per user. In addition, the standard or duplicated privileges might have wrong settings.
